Legacy Application Modernization

RuboCop Rails is a RuboCop extension gem that adds Rails-specific "cops" (lint rules) for flagging deprecated APIs, unsafe patterns, and style deviations in Ruby on Rails codebases. It was split out of RuboCop core into its own gem and repository in 2018 and is maintained by the same community team that maintains RuboCop itself, under the rubocop GitHub organization, not by a commercial vendor. It targets Rails 4.2 and newer and is configured through the same .rubocop.yml mechanism as core RuboCop, including a TargetRailsVersion setting to scope which cops apply. Like the rest of the RuboCop ecosystem, it flags code for a human to fix; it does not rewrite application logic or perform migrations on its own.

Backstage is an open-source framework for building internal developer portals around a centralized software catalog, with a plugin architecture for surfacing service ownership, documentation, and CI/CD status in one place. Spotify built it internally, open-sourced it in March 2020, and donated it to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, which accepted it that September and moved it to Incubating maturity in 2022; the project is now steered by a community of contributing companies rather than by Spotify alone. Commercial distributions built on the open-source core exist, including Spotify's own hosted "Portal for Backstage" product and third-party offerings such as Roadie. Running the open-source version still requires a team to build and host its own plugins and catalog data pipeline; it is not a turnkey SaaS by default.

OpenRewrite automates selected code changes through recipes. Its Java 8-to-17 guide documents API, dependency and build changes, alongside uncovered deprecations and build plugins that need manual updates. This is technical capability evidence, not proof of a completed customer migration. The guide describes the migration recipe module as source-available: compiled binaries are available to Moderne customers, while non-commercial users can compile it locally.

Its FactoryBot repository describes a library for setting up Ruby objects as test data; the repository is not archived and shows recent activity as of October 6, 2026.
