Spotify built it internally, open-sourced it in March 2020, and donated it to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, which accepted it that September and moved it to Incubating maturity in 2022; the project is now steered by a community of contributing companies rather than by Spotify alone. Commercial distributions built on the open-source core exist, including Spotify's own hosted "Portal for Backstage" product and third-party offerings such as Roadie. Running the open-source version still requires a team to build and host its own plugins and catalog data pipeline; it is not a turnkey SaaS by default.
