Retain
Leave the system where it is, on purpose, and revisit on a stated date. The cheapest option and the correct one for stable systems with no business pressure behind them.
Retire
Decommission the system and absorb what still matters elsewhere. Portfolio assessments routinely find applications nobody has opened in a year still under support contract.
Repurchase
Replace the custom system with a commercial or SaaS product and migrate the data. Fastest route off a legacy estate where the business logic is not actually differentiating.
Rehost
Move the workload to new infrastructure without changing the code — lift and shift. Lowest risk and fastest exit from a datacenter or a mainframe lease, with none of the running-cost benefit.
Replatform
Move the workload and change the runtime around it — managed database, container platform, new middleware — while the application code stays largely intact.
Refactor
Restructure the code in place: decompose a monolith, replace a dead framework, convert a source language. The most common shape of a modernization engagement and the widest cost band.
Rebuild
Rewrite the system against the same business requirements. The highest cost and the highest risk, justified when the existing implementation is the constraint rather than the platform.
