Redis Ltd

Who They Are:
The company behind Redis. In March 2024 it moved Redis from the BSD licence to a dual RSALv2/SSPLv1 choice, which prompted the Linux Foundation's Valkey fork. With Redis 8.0, released May 1, 2025, it added AGPLv3 as a third option, so Redis Open Source 8.0 and later is available under RSALv2, SSPLv1 or AGPLv3 at the user's choice. Redis 7.4 to 7.8 remain RSALv2/SSPLv1 only, and 7.2 and earlier remain BSD. Redis also folded the Redis Stack technologies (JSON, Time Series, probabilistic data types, Redis Query Engine) into core Redis 8 and added vector sets. Its commercial products are Redis Software (the self-managed enterprise edition, also called Redis Enterprise) and Redis Cloud.

Best For:
Companies that rely on the JSON, search or time-series capabilities that were Redis Stack modules and want them from the original vendor. Since Redis 8 those capabilities ship in Redis Open Source itself, so the commercial case now rests on Redis Software or Redis Cloud features and support, not on access to the modules.

Alternative To Valkey:
For companies where those modules are mission-critical and Valkey equivalents (Elasticsearch, PostgreSQL JSONB, Neo4j) would take significant re-engineering. Valkey remains BSD-licensed and Linux Foundation governed; staying on Redis trades licence terms and subscription cost for avoiding migration work.

Red Flags:
RSALv2 prohibits making Redis available to third parties as a service, and AGPLv3 carries network copyleft obligations, so any team embedding or hosting Redis should have its licence choice reviewed. Commercial subscriptions carry annual costs. RedisGraph was withdrawn (end of support January 31, 2025) and is not part of Redis 8.
