Modern Systems

Modern Systems is a mainframe application modernization specialist formed in 2014 when BluePhoenix Solutions and ATERAS merged. Advanced (now OneAdvanced), a UK software group, announced a definitive agreement to acquire it in April 2019; the purchase is dated to July 2019. Modern Systems then operated under the Advanced name.

In January 2024, IBM announced a definitive agreement to acquire Modern Systems and other application modernization capabilities from Advanced, with closing expected in the second quarter of 2024. IBM said the team has more than 30 years of mainframe modernization experience and that its services would complement IBM watsonx Code Assistant for Z. Trade press and Wikipedia describe the business as now part of IBM Consulting, rebranded IBM ModernSystems.

IBM's announcement lists assessment and design, mainframe transformation and integration, and full deployment among the services. Earlier Modern Systems material emphasised replatforming and emulation that keep COBOL running on x86; whether that route is still offered under IBM is unconfirmed, so the approach and platform tags on this profile reflect the historical positioning.
