If you still run SQL Server 2016

Extended support ended on 14 July 2026, and the first ESU year is under way. The last ESU date is 17 July 2029, but ESU is a bridge rather than a plan: it delivers fixes only when Microsoft finds a Critical vulnerability and adds no features.

The realistic options:

  • Upgrade to SQL Server 2022 or 2025. Extended support runs to January 2033 and January 2036 (2022, 2025). SQL Server 2017 only buys until 12 October 2027.
  • Move to a managed service. Azure SQL Managed Instance or Azure SQL Database remove the version lifecycle. They need a compatibility and cost assessment first.
  • Subscribe to ESU while you migrate. Billed hourly per core through Azure Arc. Microsoft gives SQL Server 2016 on Azure VMs no free-ESU benefit, unlike SQL Server 2014, so a lift-and-shift does not avoid the charge.
  • Stay unpatched. The database keeps running, but every new vulnerability stays open.

Check the Windows Server version underneath as well. A SQL Server 2016 host on Windows Server 2012 loses its operating-system patches on 13 October 2026; see Windows Server 2012.

Frequently asked questions

Is SQL Server 2016 still supported?

Not under standard support. Mainstream support ended on 13 July 2021 and extended support on 14 July 2026 (Microsoft lifecycle page). Paid Extended Security Updates began on 15 July 2026.

When does SQL Server 2016 reach end of support?

Extended support ended on 14 July 2026. ESU Year 1 runs to July 2027 and Year 3 ends on 17 July 2029, the last date Microsoft lists.

Can I get extended support for SQL Server 2016?

Yes, through Microsoft's ESU subscription, billed hourly via Azure Arc. Unlike SQL Server 2014, moving a SQL Server 2016 workload to an Azure VM does not make the ESUs free. ESUs ship only when a Critical vulnerability is found and carry no new features.

What can replace SQL Server 2016?

SQL Server 2022 (extended support to January 2033) or 2025 (to January 2036), or a managed Azure SQL service. SQL Server 2017 leaves standard support on 12 October 2027, so it is a short-lived target.
