If you still run SharePoint Server 2016 and 2019

The deadline has passed: extended support for both versions ended on 14 July 2026. Microsoft published one more round of security updates on 11 August 2026, but its lifecycle pages commit to nothing after 14 July and list no paid ESU period.

The realistic options:

  • Move to SharePoint Server Subscription Edition. It keeps the farm on-premises and is in support under the Modern Lifecycle Policy. Expect an upgrade project, not a patch: custom solutions, third-party web parts and workflows need testing against the new version.
  • Move content to SharePoint in Microsoft 365. This ends server maintenance but requires migrating sites, permissions, customisations and integrations.
  • Run on unsupported software for a defined period. Restrict access to the farm, remove it from the internet, and set a dated exit plan. Without vendor patches, new vulnerabilities stay open.

Inventory the farm before choosing: site count and size, custom code, workflows, search, and what integrates with it. That inventory decides which route is feasible and how long it takes.

Frequently asked questions

Is SharePoint Server 2016 or 2019 still supported?

No. Microsoft's lifecycle pages list the extended end date as 14 July 2026 for both versions (SharePoint 2016, SharePoint 2019). Neither page lists a paid Extended Security Update period.

Does SharePoint 2016 or 2019 still get security updates?

Microsoft's support site shows security updates dated 11 August 2026 for both versions (KB5002905 for 2016, KB5002894 for 2019), a month after the end date. The lifecycle pages give no commitment to further updates, so plan on 14 July 2026 as the end.

What replaces SharePoint Server 2016 and 2019?

SharePoint Server Subscription Edition, which follows the Modern Lifecycle Policy and keeps the farm on-premises, or SharePoint in Microsoft 365. Microsoft's lifecycle page lists Subscription Edition as in support.

Is it safe to keep running SharePoint 2016 or 2019?

Without a continuing patch commitment, each newly found vulnerability may stay open. CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalogue already includes SharePoint Server entries.
