If you still run Magento 1

Adobe's deadline passed on 30 June 2020. Magento 1 receives no security patches or quality fixes from Adobe, and Adobe told merchants that from that date they carry greater responsibility for site security and PCI DSS compliance.

The realistic options:

  • Migrate to a current platform. Adobe's route is Adobe Commerce or Magento Open Source 2, with a Data Migration Tool that transfers store data from the Magento 1 database. A database transfer does not cover the theme, extensions or custom code, so plan and price those separately. Moving to a different commerce platform is the other main choice.
  • Run community patches. OpenMage LTS is a community-maintained fork of Magento 1 that publishes security fixes and bug fixes. It is an unofficial project, not an Adobe product, and it comes with no support contract, so it lowers risk without giving you anyone to hold accountable.
  • Keep running it unpatched. The checkout and customer data then sit on software that nobody maintains.

A store that takes card payments should involve its payment provider and its assessor before settling on any of these.

Frequently asked questions

Is Magento 1 still supported?

No. Adobe ended support for Magento 1.x, including security patches and quality fixes, on 30 June 2020, as reported by Help Net Security from Adobe's announcement. Adobe's current lifecycle policy covers Adobe Commerce 2.x.

Does staying on Magento 1 affect PCI compliance?

Adobe warned merchants that after 30 June 2020 they carry increased responsibility for the security of the site and for PCI DSS compliance (quoted by Help Net Security). Whether an unsupported store passes an assessment is a question for your qualified security assessor.

Is OpenMage a replacement for Magento 1 support?

OpenMage LTS is a community-driven fork that publishes security patches and bug fixes for Magento 1 code. Its own repository calls it an unofficial project. It is not an Adobe product, and it does not come with a support contract or a service level.

What can replace Magento 1?

Adobe's route is Adobe Commerce or Magento Open Source 2, with a Data Migration Tool for moving data. Other commerce platforms are an alternative.
