If you still run IBM i (AS/400)

If you run IBM i 7.4, the standard-support date has passed: it was 30 September 2026. From 1 October 2026 you are on IBM's Service Extension, which runs to 30 September 2029. IBM i 7.3 is already in the extension, which ends 30 September 2028. IBM i 7.5 and 7.6 have no announced end date.

The realistic options:

  • Upgrade to 7.5 or 7.6. This returns the system to standard support and is the usual first step. Check that your hardware generation and third-party software support the target release before scheduling.
  • Pay for the Service Extension. It covers a release past its standard end date and gives you time to plan. IBM's release life cycle page lists no price.
  • Rehost. Move the workload to hosted infrastructure to keep the application unchanged while the hardware question is settled.
  • Migrate. Rewriting or replacing RPG and CL applications is the longest route. The AS/400 to cloud guide covers scope, risk and cost ranges.
