Advanced

Advanced, now trading as OneAdvanced, is a UK software and services group. It acquired Modern Systems, a US mainframe modernization specialist, in 2019 (announced April, dated July). Advanced's own news archive carries an item titled "Application Modernization Leader Modern Systems Rebrands to Advanced", so the "Advanced (formerly Modern Systems)" label describes the acquired unit's branding rather than the parent company's history.

In January 2024, IBM announced a definitive agreement to acquire Modern Systems and other application modernization capabilities from Advanced, with closing expected in the second quarter of 2024. Law-firm and trade coverage describe the deal as a carve-out sale of that business, now part of IBM Consulting. OneAdvanced's current site is organised around sector and function software (healthcare, education, legal, finance, HR) and no longer lists a modernization offering, so this profile describes the historical COBOL and mainframe work rather than a service buyers can contract from Advanced today. Azure Migrate

Azure Migrate is Microsoft's free assessment and migration hub for discovering on-premises servers, SQL Server databases and web apps, mapping their dependencies, and assessing Azure readiness and sizing before a workload moves. Microsoft announced general availability, at no additional charge, on February 28, 2018, and has since added database, web-app and virtual-desktop support and an Azure Copilot migration agent (in preview). The service does not charge for discovery or assessment; customers pay for the Azure resources the migrated workloads use, and partner tools launched from the hub may charge.

AWS Mainframe Modernization

AWS Mainframe Modernization is AWS's managed service for moving COBOL, PL/I, and Assembler workloads onto AWS, offered in two patterns. Replatform, powered by Rocket Software's Enterprise Suite (formerly Micro Focus), recompiles existing COBOL and PL/I largely unchanged onto AWS infrastructure. Refactor converts the application and its data layer into a Java stack (an Angular front end over an API-driven Java backend) while preserving functional equivalence. Refactor originally ran on the Blu Age automated-conversion engine; as of 2025 those capabilities are folded into AWS Transform for mainframe, AWS's agentic modernization service, which reached general availability in May 2025.
