AWS Outposts is Amazon's fully managed hardware service that ships AWS-designed server racks, or compact 1U/2U server units, to a customer's own data center, retail store, or factory floor so the same EC2, EBS, and other AWS APIs run on premises. It reached general availability in December 2019 as 42U Outposts racks scaling up to 96 racks per site, with the smaller Outposts Servers form factor added later for space-constrained edge locations. Outposts is billed like other AWS infrastructure and stays connected to a parent AWS Region for control-plane operations, making it a hybrid extension of AWS rather than a standalone on-premises product.
